THENEWGLOBALWORKFORCEExpatriatesx14orx1cexpatsx1dforshortx14arethesmallestportionoftheglobalworkforceandthedex1anitionoftheexpatisshifting.Todayx19sworkforceconsistsoflocalslocallyhiredforeignersthelargestcomponentoftheglobalworkforcelocalnationalsexpatsandarangeofbusinesstravelers.Locallyhiredforeignersarepeoplewhomovedtoanewcountrybeforeseekingemploymentx14theyarex1clocalhiresx1dbutstillx1cforeigners.x1dLocalnationalsarepeoplewhohaveattainedresidencyinadifferentcountryx14sotheyarenx19tforeignersbutarenx19tfullcitizens.Bothofthesegroupsaretypesofexpats.Traditionallyanexpatissomeonewholivesorworksinacountryorculturethatisnottheoneinwhichtheywereraised.In2010thereweremorethan200millionpeoplelivinginplacesotherthantheirnativehomelandalthoughtheystillclaimedcitizenshiptotheircountryofbirth.Theycomprisethechangingmeaningofwhatitmeanstobeanexpat.WhilethewordhastraditionallybeenassociatedwiththeWesternworldtheclassix1acationofexpatcancoverprofessionalslifestyleandeconomicmigrantsandinternationalstudentsfromanywhere.InfactdespiteprevailingWesternperceptionstherearefewerUSnativesemployedoverseasandmorecitizensfromothercountriesx14forexampleaNigerianinFranceisanexpat.WHOAREEXPATSTODAYExpatscannolongerbethoughtofasjustAmericansinforeigncountries.Agrowingnumberoflocallyhiredforeignersandlocalnationalsarebeingplacedinkeypositionsoverseas.ANigerianinFranceoraKoreaninSwedenrepresentsthenewfaceofexpats.
