WITH 25% OF CHILDREN IN US NOW BEING RAISED BY A SINGLE PARENT, NEED FOR SINGLE PARENT RESOURCES ON THE RISE

HRI Reports Increase in Single Parent Support Calls, Prepares for Summer Stressors

NEW YORK, May 11, 2011 — A new report from Harris, Rothenberg International (HRI), a leading employee/employer resource firm, finds that there has been a 120% increase in calls from single parents since 2008. The HRI report comes on the heels of new findings from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development that one in four children in the United States (25%) are being raised by a single parent.  With summer fast approaching, balancing work and home, without the school safety-net will become a top priority for single parents.

According to HRI’s Director of Work/Life Services, Eileen Mendez, “Our child care specialists have seen a steady rise in the number of single parent households asking for assistance.  We have also documented an increase in the number of single fathers raising children on their own and asking for support.” Specifically, HRI reports a 57% increase since 2008 in calls from single fathers, and a 129% increase in calls from single mothers.

Single parent callers seek a variety of support services and resources from HRI child care specialists, including:

  • Child care options including extended hour/weekend care (many single parents are working two jobs to make ends meet)
  • Parenting classes (how to parent after divorce, how to handle single parent issues)
  • Support groups/networking opportunities for themselves as well as support groups and educational material for their children living in a single parent household
  • Local and national organizations for single parenting (for information on single parent rights, events impacting single parent households, etc.)

“With the school year winding down, working parents, and particularly single working parents are actively seeking help finding options for summer activities, schools, and educational programs,” said Dr. Edward Trieber, CEO of HRI. “Employers, who support their employees with HRI’s innovative Work/Life service programs, especially during these more stressful summer months, will see increased productivity and subsequently less stress in their employees, Changing that dynamic can have long term, positive effects on the entire workplace.”
